Exams in Style?

It is so difficult to be inspired during exam months. Y’know, fashion-wise. Waiting to go into the exam halls, surrounded by 100+ other students awash with a disheartening spirit, looking around is a bleak and miserable thing. I personally would rather be sitting down with June’s copy of Elle* and a nice cuppa, as opposed to sitting down with a headache, 3 pens (preparation is key, I found out during the 1 pen disaster during the SATs of ’09) and a history final. I look to the invigilators, walking around in their caffeine-induced zombie-like daze, hopeful for some fashion sense, only to be disappointed by their poor socks-with-sandals effort.

After completing the history test with time to spare, my mind wonders: imagine if our invigilators were über cool people like Zach Braff and Rosie-Huntington-Whitely (who is from now on to be referred to as RHW, as that name is too long to type. Who says teenagers are lazy?). Zach could sing ‘GUY LOVE’** with me while Rosie struts up and down the walkways in something fabulously ‘vomit-pink’. If only.

(*Have you seen July’s cover girl? The aforementioned RHW! She looks stunning. She has a sort of odd-looking face, more striking than traditionally pretty. I love how Elle have used a sort of juxtaposition in the shoot, between the strong, striking features of her face and hair and the soft, romancey-ness (that’s a word, right?) of the clothes. Her cheekbones would cut you like glass and she pulls of a silk Nina Ricci blouse not quite like you’ve ever seen, so check out the issue now. Preview pictures below…)

(**I am a long-term Scrubs fan, therefore Zach Braff (AKA J.D.) being my ideal invigilator is not surprising. If you have no idea what I mean when I mention the song ‘Guy Love’, you’re missing out. The ‘Guy Love’ refers to the bromance between J.D. and his best friend Turk. Check it out below…)

Its Just A Matter Of…

…When the next internet attack is going to hit.

As you all know, this is a fashion blog, not a personal one. However, this is a blog on the internet, so I’m going to talk about an internet-related incident today (rather than fashion).

You may or may not have heard about this story – NJ Student’s Suicide Illustrates Internet Dangers – the story of Tyler Clementi, an 18-year-old from New Jersey, who committed suicide last week, after his classmates secretly filmed him and his partner, and proceeded to stream it live over the internet. This case of cyber-bullying and invasions of privacy were made worse by allegations of homophobia that probably led to Tyler’s death. As the video publicly ‘outed’ Clementi, one student went so far as to say “Had he been in bed with a woman, this would not have happened. He wouldn’t have been outed via an online broadcast, and his privacy would have been respected and he might still have his life.”

And this is just another case that exemplifies the danger that is the internet. It’d be the best invention to date, were it not for all the malicious and unforgiving acts that can be published for the entire world to see, and never taken back again. I recently deleted my social networking account on Facebook (luckily, not because of cyber-bullying but because I needed a break from the account that kept me chained to my computer every day and night), but was thinking of reactivating it, and possibly getting a Twitter, too. Sadly, the cases of cyber bullying that seem to be occurring everywhere these days, have put me off the idea. I’m not one to be fazed by the risks of today’s precarious society, but wouldn’t we all be a little better off without social networking sites anyway? Or chat rooms, or instant messaging for that matter. What’s wrong with writing a letter, making a phone call, or actually speaking face to face? Nothing.

With all the marvels that came with 21st century life (HD, iPad,  even a jab for preventing cervical cancer), we are still not protected from the vulnerabilities that come with putting our life online. And if I am not protected from this, so much so that’s its driving people to their death, then I’d rather be living in the 1800s. There may have been no iPads or 3D movies then, but I would be safe from cyber bullying.

10 Things I Love Sunday

So it’s a Sunday. When there’s nothing better to do than to sit around on the computer all day and list 10 things that you love. I mean why not?

1) Cupcakes.

Who doesn’t?

I have found this great site called Cupcake-A-Licious.co.uk who are Surry based cupcake dudes. They take your order online, and you get to pick from a HUGE range of delicious cupcakes. And I’m talking the so-good-you-almost-don’t-want-to-open-the-box-but-do-anyway-because-they-look-so-good good. So yeah, that’s one of my favourite sites, but pretty much any website that has the word cupcake in the URL can’t be a bad’un.

2) Making lists.

I am not at all organized, but I love making lists (like this one) and scribbling post it notes, and sticking random things on my notice board. You would think this would help me be an organized person with an organized life. Alas, it does not. Oh and I also love moodboards. I’ve never done a proper one before, but will be attempting one a la Tavi, very soon.

3) Reading.

Right now I’m in between three books (ooh don’t I sound clever! No? Sorry I’ll stop); Candy by Kevin Brooks, The Face and Cold Fire, both by Dean Koontz. Love a bit of Dean Koontz. He actually gives me nightmares with his thrillers. But that’s why I read them. So if you love a good scare, mild disturbance and high tension thrills, read any Dean Koontz book. I recommend The Husband and Velocity, as they’re the only other two I’ve read but still…

Confession: I actually Googled ‘how many calories can you burn whilst reading?’ and on average, 11-15 calories a day can be burnt just by flicking through the pages of a good book. GET READING PEOPLE!

4) Tumblr.

I have recently found joy in Tumblr.com. For those of you who are unfamiliar, Tumblr is a blog hosting site, just like WordPress or Blogger. The difference being it’s mainly a photolog. This is a blog made up entirely out of pictures. So a ‘Tumblr’ can post any picture they find inspirational. Some Tumblrs are categorized.

For example, I like party tights for mainly fashion photography, or this is why you’re fat for amazing food photography, or movie of the day for wonderfully amusing pictures of your favourite movies. My Tumblr (fashion victim) is more random: I post mainly fashion photography, but on top of that, anything else that looks pretty or inspires me :)

5) Thick Cotton Dresses.

On a recent trip to London with my mom, we saw some amazing cotton dresses in Camden Market. It was wet and cold, but those snugly dresses looked thick enough to warm you up. Regretfully, I didn’t purchase one, but I will (cue evil villain laugh) MWAHAHA…

Anyway..they came in lovely spring colours, some pastels and my favourite, a deep dark blue with little roses along the edge. They were very school-girl-ish and if you were to light a match around them you’d go up in seconds, but I’d say they really are a key item for A/W 2010.

6) Magazines.

Has anybody read May’s issue of British Elle? Of course you have. I thoroughly enjoyed this month’s cover star story, Demi Moore: back to Hollywood. She explains how hard it was to take a huge step back from the multi-million dollar limelight and concentrate on getting the  ‘body obsession’ monkey off her back. Last month saw the edgy coolness of Chloe Sevigny, a personal life icon of mine. Life icon? Yeah I think that’s what I meant. I mean I like her attitude to life, how she goes about choosing acting roles, and of course, her style.

And of course, the latest Vogue issue stars a fresh looking Gwyneth Paltrow and a fabulous ‘Born In The USA’ editorial featuring Karlie Kloss, one of my favourite models of the moment. And there are many more marvellous magazines out this month. All this reading…I must have burnt off a ton of calories!!

7) Desserts

You may have noticed from my previous post (Smiley Face Food) and the aforementioned Cupcakes (but they’re more snacks than desserts, so shush), that I do dearly love desserts. Especially cute pink desserts. They may be the best part of a meal for me. But they have got to look nice, presentation is everything. There aren’t many desserts that I don’t like. Put simply, if it looks nice (presentation, presentation, PRESENTATION), I’ll eat it :)

8) Miu Miu Spring 2010

I’m in love with the Miu Miu’s spring collection. It teams masculinity and femininity brilliantly. I also love the randomness and quirkiness of the collection; the pantsuit with the naked bodies all over it, the shoes with the white birds all over it, the scorpion-resembling gold and bronze embellishments. It’s all so random, but fascinating to look at!

9) Eric Wasson

One of my favourite models of the moment, Texas-born Erin Wasson’s sharp features and sharper attitude have been featured in countless magazines, including French, Australian, German and Spanish Vogue, Flair, Esquire, Elle, Numero and Allure.  She’s walked for Armani, Chloe, Lanvin, Lagerfeld, Gucci and many more A-List designers. Most recently, she’s produced her own womenswear collection in collaboration with the surf and skate lifestyle brand RVCA.

I like her feisty attitude and her sharp, eye-catching looks. She brings diversity you don’t see in other dainty little models, and she’s the type of model the industry needs more of.

10) Learning About Politics.

In order to develop more of an understanding of different parties, as May’s General Election impends, my mom has put a task to my brother and I: we are to go away and research each party and their policies, decide who we would vote for, then give a small presentation to mom explaining why we are partial to the party we are partial to (try saying that when your drunk). It might sound silly (and mother may not take either of our presentations into account and vote entirely of her own accord, which is…fine), but this has been really interesting for me.

Many of the magazines I’ve been reading from March till May have contained ‘Election Specials’: articles by top-notch political journalists, so they have helped tremendously (namely Tatler, Elle and Harper’s Bizarre). And I’m nearly ready for the ‘presentation’ :)

WOO, that was a long post. On a completely random, useless topic. Great stuff. Hope you enjoyed, more posts soon! :)

Smiley Face Food

Its Easter break here in the UK. Two weeks off, yaaaay!

This means I can happily spend my days dressing up for no reason what so ever. Now, in the interest of anonymity, I have, rather amusingly, cropped my head off. The pictures, that is. It is a pleasant enough day, if slightly windy. But I was woken up rudely and abruptly by the parentals (yes I know it’s a cool word), so I decide to reflect my tiresomeness in my outfit, with different shades of grey. So I have gone with comfortable, somewhat skinny jeans, a dark grey vest top, a grey tailored boyfriend blazer, shimmery grey cut out patent flats and a vintage short mix bead necklace in spring pastels. No makeup and hair was blowdried and moussed for a wavy-ish dishevelled look. Also, take note on my marvellous posh-totty-polo-playing pose. Y’know because of the hands, and the blazer and…oh forget it.

(Vintage blazer, vest by Paul & Joe, jeans and shoes by New Look and vintage necklace)

Go back a few days, and it’s your typical English weather. It’s cold, it’s windy and rain is more than likely on the way. I don’t want to do anything today, except for catch up on Desperate Housewives of course (I know I’ve stooped to this level, but if you haven’t seen it you must, a definite guilty pleasure!) and so I wear a lazy day vintage grey wool cardigan (AGAIN WITH THE GREY!?), my comfortable, somewhat skinny jeans (okay, so I wear the same clothes days at a time, you caught me), and just for a Gene Kelly style walk (dance) in the (soon to come) rain, I put on some Michael Kors black patent heels.

(Vintage cardigan, heels by Michael Kors and jeans as before)

Also, I had a lovely lunch today (blazer and all) at Wing-Wai, a chinese buffet-type restaurant. They served delightful little home-made desserts and, being the immature child I am, I made smiley faces out of them! It’s so much fun playing with your food I tell you.

So this one had three eyes.

A close up of the three eyes.

And this just might be my masterpiece.

Telephone

Even if you can’t stand the pokerfaced Lady Gaga or the single lady Beyonce, you must watch this video. With its racy outfits, multiple homicides, strong language, and ‘prison for bitches’, the video of Telephone by Lady Gaga and Beyonce has controversial and amazing, written all over it.

Franco Fever

I’m not obsessed or nuffin’…

Dave Franco. There’s two of ’em :|
